When a report published late last year revealed that black women within the UK were five times more likely to die in childbirth than their white counterparts, Candice Brathwaite couldn’t help but be reminded of her own traumatic birthing experience. 

In an interview with the Telegraph, the 31-year old explained that her symptoms of postpartum sepsis – a leading cause of maternal mortality – were repeatedly ignored by medical professionals, leaving her fighting for her life. 

She said: “For five days after my daughter was born, midwives had been coming to my home and I’d said, ‘I don’t feel well, I just don’t feel right – I’m sweating through to the mattress and I’m feeling discombobulated’.” …
